Plywood vs MDF vs Particle Board: What to Use Where in an Indian Home
The honest comparison — strength, moisture behaviour, cost and where each material genuinely belongs in an Indian home.

This is the decision that quietly determines whether your furniture still looks right in five years. It is also the easiest place for a quote to be cut without you noticing.

Where each one actually belongs
Plywood — kitchens, wardrobes, anything load-bearing or near water. BWP grade under the sink and in the kitchen base, BWR for wardrobes and overheads. If a piece of furniture will hold weight or meet moisture, this is not the place to save.
MDF (or better, HDHMR) — shutters, decorative panelling, and anything to be painted or lacquered. MDF takes a duco or lacquer finish far more evenly than plywood because it has no grain. Wall panelling, jaali screens and CNC-cut designs are all MDF territory.
Particle board — light-duty, dry, low-lifespan use. Study table tops, a temporary unit in a rented flat, back panels. It has a place; that place is not your kitchen.
How to check what you are actually getting
- Ask for the brand and grade stamp on the sheet, and photograph it at site before the carpentry starts.
- Look at the edge of a cut sheet: plywood shows distinct layers, MDF is uniform brown, particle board shows visible chips.
- Check for the ISI mark (IS:303 for plywood, IS:710 for BWP).
- A sheet that feels unusually light for its size is usually lower density than claimed.
The edge banding matters more than people think
Whatever the core material, water enters through unsealed edges. Insist on 2mm PVC edge banding on all exposed edges in kitchens and bathrooms — 0.8mm is the default and it lifts within a couple of years in wet zones.
A practical mix for most homes
- Kitchen base and under-sink: BWP plywood, WPC if budget allows
- Kitchen shutters: MDF/HDHMR with laminate or acrylic
- Wardrobe carcass: BWR plywood
- Wardrobe shutters: laminate on ply, or MDF if painted
- TV unit and panelling: MDF
- Loft storage and back panels: particle board is acceptable
That mix keeps cost sensible while putting the strong material only where the load and the water are.

Which is better, plywood or MDF?
Neither is universally better. Plywood is stronger, holds screws better and survives moisture, so it belongs in kitchens, wardrobe carcasses and load-bearing furniture. MDF has a smoother surface and takes paint and lacquer far better, so it belongs in shutters and decorative panelling.
Is particle board bad for furniture?
It is not bad, it is just limited. Particle board is fine for dry, light-duty, short-life items like a study table top or back panels. It should not be used in kitchens, bathrooms or anywhere it will carry weight.
What is the difference between BWR and BWP plywood?
BWR (boiling water resistant) handles occasional moisture and suits wardrobes. BWP (boiling water proof, IS:710) survives sustained water contact and is the correct grade for kitchen base units and under-sink cabinets.
Does MDF swell in Indian humidity?
Standard MDF swells badly once water reaches it. HDHMR is a denser, moisture-resistant version that performs much better and is what should be specified for kitchen shutters.
